Postgame: WBB at Seton Hall - 3/23/14

Box Score

Despite Michelle Miller scoring a career-high 34 points, a three-point play with 10 seconds left was enough to edge Seton Hall past the Princeton women’s basketball team, 75-74, Sunday in the WNIT Second Round.

The loss concludes the Tigers’ postseason run and they finish the year at 21-9.

Miller wasted no time establishing her dominance, scoring Princeton’s first nine points from beyond the arc and lifting the Tigers to a 9-4 lead at 16:53.

She went on to shoot 11-for-13 from the field and was 8-of-9 from three-point, playing all 40 minutes. Only in her second year, Miller has already etched her name permanently into the record book. Her eight triples rank second all-time in three-pointers made in a game, while her 34 points is fourth all-time in single-game points scored history.

The lead transferred eight times and was tied at six points over the opening period, seeing the Pirates hold a slight 38-36 advantage at halftime. Miller accounted for 22 of Princeton’s first half points.

The second half proved to play out similarly and be a possession battle with both sides trading baskets for much of the period.

Princeton set up its best run nearing the midpoint of the half behind a pair of triples from Blake Dietrick and Annie Tarakchian to go up 58-54 with 11:20 to play. The Tigers managed their advantage for nearly a four-minute span, but were unable to capitalize on the offensive end allowing SHU to stay within range.

With 28 seconds left in regulation Alex Wheatley knocked in a layin to put Princeton up 74-72, but she would foul Sidney Cook on Seton Hall’s ensuing drive to set up her game-winning three-point play with 10 seconds left.

The Tigers had a final effort, but a turnover inside the paint with three seconds left sent the Pirates away with the win.

Princeton was led by a trio of sophomores, as Wheatley and Tarakchian joined Miller scoring in double figures. Whealtey had 15 points and Tarakchian posted her second consecutive double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Princeton finished shooting 54.3 percent (25-for-46) from the field to Seton Hall’s 44.8 percent (30-for-67) and held a 36-32 rebounding advantage, but the Pirates scored 28 points off the Tigers’ 28 turnovers.
