The fourth-ranked Princeton men's lightweight rowing team will keep the Wood-Hammond Trophy at the Shea Rowing Center for an eighth straight year after topping Penn by six seconds on the Schuylkill River Saturday morning.

"After a tough week in Ithaca last Saturday I thought all of our crews had a great week of practice heading into the Wood-Hammond races," head coach Marty Crotty said. "Unfortunately, with the tricky conditions on the Schuylkill today, I'm not sure our guys had a chance to feel great about their rowing, but we know how hard it is to get wins in our league, so we are happy with the results today in the first, second and third varsity races."

Princeton moved to 4-1 overall, 1-1 in the Ivy League, with its wins over Penn and Georgetown during the morning. It was the Tigers' second win over the Hoyas this season, and it was the 58th win in 70 attempts in the Wood-Hammond Trophy series.

The varsity eight, which dropped its first race of the season last weekend at Cornell, won Saturday morning in a time of 5:32.4, while Penn placed second in 5:38.4.

The second varsity had a similar margin of victory, posting a winning time of 5:40.2 to win by 6.1 seconds over the Quakers. The third varsity topped the Penn 2F in a time of 5:54.0.

Penn earned its lone win of the morning in the freshman eight, as the Quakers' time of 5:30.4 topped Princeton by 7.7 seconds.

"Although our freshmen were unable to win, they are still gaining speed and hung in there against Penn, who have proven to be the best frosh crew in the league so far this season," Crotty said.

Princeton will now look forward to its biggest weekend of the regular season, as it will host No. 1 Harvard and No. 2 Yale on Lake Carnegie next Saturday morning for the Goldthwait and Vogel Cups.
