Led by three home runs including a Tyler Servais grand slam and a pair of five-run innings, the Princeton baseball team defeated Harvard 13-1 to open Sunday’s doubleheader.

On a day where the Tigers combined for five home runs and added a second grand slam in game two was not enough to sweep the season series. After retaking the lead with a nine-run rally over the final three frames, Princeton was unable to preserve its lead and fell 20-19.

Turning Point of the Game: In game one, Alex Flink hit the first of three RBI doubles to open Princeton’s first of two five-run innings in the second. Between Servais and Alec Keller RBI doubles, Johnny Mishu added an RBI single of his own to prop the Tigers to a 5-0 lead. Princeton added eight insurance runs between the fourth through seventh to seal the win.

Game two served to have plot twists every three innings. After Princeton established a 7-3 lead in the second, Harvard capitalized on three Tiger errors and 12 hits to go up 17-10 by the sixth inning. Led by a Mike Ford seventh inning grand slam, Princeton retook control, 19-17, in the top of the ninth. The Tigers were unable to maintain their advantage for the final half inning and Harvard scored the game-winning run off an A.J. Goetz wild pitch.

Player/Pitcher of the Game: Ford improved to 3-0 behind his 13-1 complete game one victory. He tallied a season-high seven strikeouts, while scattering four hits and two walks in 28 batters faced.

The right-handed pitcher not only was productive on the mound, but finished the day 5-for-10 with seven RBI and five runs. In the early game he hit a solo homer over the center field fence and followed that up with a grand slam in game two. His four-RBI at-bat headlined the Tigers’ comeback effort, as he had a season-best six RBI in the game.

Batter of the Game: Third baseman Flink was productive at the plate, accounting for eight Tiger runs over both games. He went 5-for-9, including a double, four runs, four RBI and a walk.

Honorable Mentions: Freshmen Billy Arendt and Danny Hoy hit their first career home runs at Harvard. Hoy’s came in game one as the leadoff batter in the fifth inning, while Arendt sent a three-run bomb to left center in game two.

Sophomore Servais also hit his first long ball of the year and first career grand slam. He finished the day with two hits, five RBI, four runs and a walk.

On Deck: Princeton remains on the road for its next six games, heading to Monmouth on Wednesday, Apr. 10, before going to Penn for a four-game series from Apr. 13-14.
