The afternoon started well for the Princeton softball team, but the Tigers suffered a setback in the Ivy South race with a split at Harvard to open the weekend.

Princeton won the opener 4-1 but Harvard took game two 11-3 in five innings. With the split, Princeton is now 19-10 overall and 4-2 in the Ivy. The Tigers are one game behind Penn, which swept Yale Friday, with 14 to play and all four head-to-head meetings coming next weekend. Cornell stands two back of Penn and Columbia is three back.

Harvard (10-16, 3-3) is one of three Ivy North teams at 3-3 in that division, with that trio leading Brown by two games.

In the opener, Princeton senior Alex Peyton (6-3) was able to extend her streak of innings without an earned run allowed to 27 1/3 before giving up Harvard's only run in the sixth. Peyton finished with six hits and four walks allowed, striking out five.

Princeton led 3-0 after five innings before Harvard got on the board and then the Tigers tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to help seal Peyton's win. Peyton and Cousens led Princeton at the plate with two hits apiece.

In the nightcap, Harvard led 3-0 after the first three innings before Princeton pulled within 3-2 on a Candy Button two-RBI double, but any chance to salvage the sweep was quickly put to rest by the Crimson in the bottom of the fourth. Harvard scored six times and got back a Princeton run in the top of the fifth to close out the run-rule victory.

Liza Kuhn (5-4) started and finished the game, giving way to Shanna Christian for an inning of relief. The two Tigers combined to give up 12 hits and walk four, earning eight of the 11 runs as three Princeton errors hurt the cause. On offense, Lizzy Pierce led with two of Princeton's five hits.

The Tigers will aim to rebound Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader at Dartmouth.
