Sam Butler had a big impact as a freshman with the Tigers, appearing in all 33 games and playing a significant role in both the Tiger offense and defense. Butler ranked second on the team with 25 assists and third with 29 steals. The freshman also drew 16 ejectios and scored four goals. Butler opened his college career with an assist and four steals in a win over Santa Clara and scored his first goal in a win over Harvard. Butler added a goal, assist and steal in a road win at Navy and had his first of four two-assist games in a loss at ninth-ranked UC Davis. Butler notched two assists in a win over George Washington and scored in a home win against Fordham. He added two more assists, two steals and two drawn ejections in the Southern semifinals against Johns Hopkins. At Easterns he notched two assists in the semifinals against St. Francis and then scored a goal in the championship game win over Navy. Butler added two steals in Princeton's win over UC San Diego to claim third place at the NCAA Championships.
Butler attended George Mason High School and started for four years on the Navy Aquatics Club high school water polo team, serving as a co-captain his senior year. Butler was named to the Eastern High School All-Star Team as a sophomore, junior and senior, and recently helped Navy AC to back-to-back National State Challenge Championships, garnering tournament Most Valuable Player honors both years.
