The fifth-ranked Princeton women's squash team heads to Hartford, Conn., Saturday to take on the second-ranked Trinity Bantams in the regular season finale for both teams.
This will be the first meeting between the two teams since Trinity upset top-seeded Princeton in the 2013 Howe Cup semifinals by a 6-3 score. Trinity won two of the the three matches decided by 3-2 scores, while three of the other showdowns were close four-game matches. Trinity ended up falling to Harvard in the Howe Cup final, and it has held the No. 2 ranking throughout the season.
Princeton is currently ranked fifth, though it could stake a claim to a higher rank for next week's Howe Cup National Championships (Feb. 21-23 in Princeton) with a Saturday win. The Tigers are getting healthier as the season winds down, and they showed good form in a 9-0 win over sixth-ranked Cornell last Sunday.
Freshman Maria Elena Ubina had one of her best wins of the season against Cornell, defeating Danielle Letourneau in a tight five-game match (11-9, 11-7, 12-14, 10-12, 11-8). Letourneau was coming off a win over Penn's Anaka Alankamony, who joins Ubina as one of the contenders for Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors.
Ubina will be tested again Saturday when she takes on Trinity's Kanzy El Defrawy, the 2013 national individual finalist.
Princeton has gotten strong play throughout its lineup, including five straights wins from Nicole Bunyan at the No. 3 spot. Bunyan's best win in that streak came against Yale, when she defeated Shihui Mao 11-7, 11-8, 11-9; Mao had defeated Bunyan 3-2 last season.
Trinity is currently 12-1 this season, with its lone loss coming by a 5-4 score at No. 1 Harvard.
