“I’m happy with the way we competed today,” head coach Chris Ayres said. “You want to win every time you go out, but I just liked the fight that we showed in both matches. I’m very happy for both Ryan and Ray. Those guys earned the opportunity to compete in the lineup, and today they showed that they really belong there.”
Princeton won the opener despite trailing 10-8 at the midway point of the match. The Tigers ran off five straight wins, including three by fall, to cruise to the win. That stretch started with a first-period fall by sophomore Judd Ziegler at 165, and Callahan followed with a second-period fall at 174.
The first half of the match included a 3-2 win for junior Ryan Cash at 133, and a technical fall by 2012 NCAA qualifier Adam Krop at 149. Freshman Jordan Laster lost 7-2 at 141, but he was competitive against reigning EIWA champion Richard Durso.
In the nightcap, the reigning EIWA champion Cornell Big Red took control early, but Princeton was able to pick off a pair of wins during the second half of the match. Callahan had the first two takedowns in his win over George Pickett at 174, and O’Donnell was dominant at 285 against Jacob Aiken-Phillips; a second-period reversal and near-fall points turned a 2-2 lead into a sizable lead, and O’Donnell carried that momentum into a victory.
One of the most anticipated matches of the day came at 149, where Cornell’s eighth-ranked Chris Villalonga held off Krop for a 4-2 win. Krop scored the first takedown, but a Villalonga reversal and a second-period rideout were key factors in the 4-2 win. Ayala was also in a close battle at 197, but he fell just short in an 8-6 loss.
Princeton will head north next weekend for a trio of New England matches, including Ivy League showdowns at both Harvard (Feb. 8) and Brown (Feb. 9).
