Heavyweights Open 2013 Season With Scrimmage Sweep of Syracuse, Georgetown
In its fifth annual season-opening scrimmage with Syracuse and Georgetown, the Princeton heavyweights put forth a strong statement to start their 2013 season. The Tigers won all four races during the morning session, including a varsity eight win over Syracuse by more than nine seconds.
The day was broken into two sessions for the three programs. The morning included the four 2K races, while the afternoon included shorter scrimmage pieces.
The first race of the day was the varsity eight competition, which Princeton won in 5:47.2. Syracuse finished second in 5:56.4, while the Hoyas placed third in 5:59.1.
The Tigers also got a comfortable win from their second varsity, which defeated the Orange by more than six seconds in a time of 5:51.7. The third varsity won by more than 12 seconds (6:04.6), while the fourth varsity finished in 6:26.6 to top Syracuse by more than six seconds.
"Our boats had a solid start to the season today," head coach Greg Hughes said. "Our guys were aggressive and raced hard. It was great to have multiple pieces today so that we could test some different elements of racing and try out some different combinations in our crews. It's still March and there's still lots of work we need to do in order to be ready for what's next."
Princeton will remain home next weekend and will take on Navy at 9 am on Lake Carnegie. This will be the first dual race between the two programs since March 31, 2007, when Princeton won by more than 14 seconds.
