Two Princeton freshmen picked up their first career Ivy League wins Friday night, though they would not be enough for the Tigers in a 30-7 loss against Columbia at the New York Athletic Club.

Scott Gibbons took over the team lead with his 19th win of the season, while Cole Lampman picked up his biggest career win at heavyweight for Princeton, which fell to 2-11, 0-4 in the Ivy League. Junior Ryan Callahan nearly made a major move at All-Ivy League honors, but he dropped a close match to one of the EIVA’s top 174-pound wrestlers.

Gibbons took control early in his showdown with Drew Rebling, scoring an early takedown and adding three near-fall points to grab an early 5-0 lead. He added takedowns in both the second and third periods and never let Rebling escape in his 11-0 major decision.

That was the first celebratory moment for Princeton, which struggled in the lower weights and then ran into a ranked Columbia pair in the middleweights. Two decisions and a fall gave Columbia a 12-0 lead before sixth-ranked Steve Santos took on Princeton’s Zach Bintliff at 149. The Tiger senior co-captain fought his opponent off for much of the first, but Santos was able to get a takedown to lead 2-0 into the second. He would extend the advantage to 5-1, though Bintliff would fight back with a late reversal. He couldn’t make it any closer, and Santos left the mat with a 6-3 win.

Jake O’Hara, ranked 18th for Columbia, followed with a pin of Brandon Rolnick, which put Columbia ahead 21-0. After a Lion win at 165, the highlight match of the evening took place at 174. Callahan, coming off a sweep of Harvard and Brown last weekend, took on Columbia’s 18-win standout Stephen West.

Callahan opened the scoring with a takedown in the first period, but West ended the period with a 3-2 lead after an escape and takedown. He added a reversal to open the second, though Callahan scored an escape and trailed 5-3 going into the third. Callahan added an escape in the third, then scored a takedown near the edge of the mat to open a 5-4 lead.

Unfortunately, it wouldn’t hold up. West scored a reversal and added a penalty point to escape with an 8-6 win. Still, the effort by Callahan showed he could be a dark horse in next month’s EIWA Championships.

Gibbons finally got Princeton on the board at 184, and junior co-captain Dan Santoro lost a tight 8-6 match at 197. Lampman took the mat at the end of the evening, looking to ignite a late-season run of his own. After a scoreless first period, Lampman opened the second with an escape and scored a takedown to lead 3-0. Columbia’s Chris Manna scored a pair of escapes, but Lampman never allowed a takedown and picked up his fifth career victory 3-2.

Princeton will conclude its Ivy League season Saturday at 1 pm when it takes on Penn at the Palestra. The Tigers will host Senior Day at Dillon Gym on Sunday, Feb. 24, when they take on Boston University in the regular season finale.

The EIWA Championships will take place March 8-9 at Rutgers University.
