After a midweek heartbreaker at Rutgers, the Princeton baseball team will look to get back in the win column this weekend with doubleheaders at Yale and Brown. The Tigers (9-11 overall, 3-1 Ivy League) face the Bulldogs (6-18-1 overall, 0-4 Ivy) on Saturday, April 7 at 12 p.m. and the Bears (4-18 overall, 2-2 Ivy) at 12 p.m. the following day.
Last Time Out: A Rutgers walk-off home run handed the Tigers a 12-11 loss on April 3 in Piscataway, N.J. Princeton took an early 5-0 advantage, but the Scarlet Knights managed to take control of the game in the sixth inning and forced the Tigers to play catch up. Princeton managed to even the game 11-11 in the eighth inning, but RU's leadoff hitter sailed a ball over left center to end the game.
Prior to Princeton's loss at Rutgers, the Tigers opened up Ivy League play splitting with Dartmouth and sweeping Harvard at home.
A Look at the League: In the Gehrig Division, Columbia, Cornell, Penn and Princeton are all knotted with 3-1 Ivy records, while Brown leads the Rolfe Division at 2-2.
Mulroy Milestones: Senior Sam Mulroy hit his 24th career home run at Rutgers on April 3, making him two homers away from tying the Princeton all-time home run record. He currently leads the Ivy League in batting average (.423), hits (35), runs scored (24), RBI (26), home runs (7) and total bases (62).
In the Nation: Princeton in No. 31 in the nation in home runs per game (0.79). Sam Mulroy is No. 18 in slugging percentage, No. 24 in home runs per game, No. 31 in batting average and No. 57 in home runs. Alec Keller is No. 22 in batting average and John Mishu is No. 62 in doubles per game.
Scouting Yale: The Bulldogs of Yale (6-18-1 overall, 0-4 Ivy) enter this weekend's action riding a five-game skid. Yale was swept by Columbia and Penn in its Ivy opening weekend and dropped a 6-3 midweek decision to Sacred Heart on April 3. The Bulldog offense is led by sophomore Cale Hanson, who's 31-for-82 (.378) in 25 games played. Hanson's tallied nine runs, four RBI, seven doubles and 11 walks. On the rubber, Pat Ludwig has thrown a team-leading 35.2 innings. The senior (0-3) has a 2.27 ERA, thrown 34 strikes and given up 32 hits.
Scouting Brown: Brown opened up Ivy League play splitting its series at Columbia and Penn, before being swept by Siena in doubleheader action on April 4. The Bears, who have lost their last three games, are 4-18 overall, 2-2 Ivy on the year. Prior to hosting Princeton, Brown will host Cornell on April 7. Heath Mayo leads the Bear rotation with a 2-0 record in five starts. In 30 innings pitched, Mayo's tallied 16 strikeouts, 30 hits against and a 4.50 ERA. At the plate, Cody Slaughter is batting .349 (22-for-63) in 17 starts. Slaughter has 13 RBI, 11 runs, two home runs and a pair of doubles.
