AUSTIN, Texas (6/3/11) - The Princeton baseball team fell to Texas State 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in an elimination game at the Austin Regional of the 2011 NCAA Baseball Championships at UFCU Disch-Falk Field at the University of Texas.

Princeton starter Mike Ford and Texas State starter Mitchell Pitts locked up in a pitcher's duel on Saturday afternoon as there was just a single run scored over the first seven full innings.

Texas State put two on in the first inning and had base runners in the each of the first three innings but Ford got out of trouble each time as Princeton turned double plays in the second and third innings. Princeton went down in order in the first and third innings but got two on in the second with two outs before Pitts got the final out to strand two Princeton base runners.

The Bobcats broke through in the fourth inning with their first of three runs driven in by a sacrifice fly. Kyle Kubitza hit a lead-off double that rolled to the wall in the gap at left center and would later scored on an Andrew Stumph sac fly.

Sam Mulroy hit a two-out infield single in the fourth and got to second on a balk, but again Pitts stranded the Princeton runners. Texas State had a good chance to add to its lead in the fifth inning as the Bobcats loaded the bases with no outs, but Ford induced a 523 double play to cut off a run at the plate and got a fly out to end the inning.

Princeton had base runners in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings as Alex Flink led off the fifth with an infield single and walked to begin the seventh. John Mishu drew a one-out walk in the sixth.

Texas State added to its lead with a two-run eighth inning as two sacrifice flies plated runs. Christian Gallegos hit an infield single and got to second on an overthrow and a bunt single from Tyler Sibley put runners on the corners for Bret Atwood's sac fly. Another single pushed Sibley to third and he scored on Kubitz's sac fly, which came after a pitching change as A.J. Goetz came on in relief of Ford.

The Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the eighth inning thanks to three straight singles. Mishu, Ford and Mulroy all singled to load the bases with one out. Mishu hit a grounder up the middle and Ford ripped a liner down the first base line that bounced off Texas State first baseman and went into foul territory. Mulroy followed it with an infield single and Mishu would score when Steve Harrington fouled out to left field. Texas State closer Joseph Dvorsky got the final out to end the inning and the Princeton threat.

Ford, Mulroy and Flink each had two hits in the game as the Tigers plated a run on seven hits. Texas State pushed across three runs on nine hits. Pitts got the win as he allowed one run on six hits in 7.1 innings. Dvorsky got the save.

Ford allowed three runs on nine hits, also in 7.1 innings, while A.J. Goetz got five outs without allowing a hit.

Princeton ends its season at 23-24 overall.
