Ford Interview About Signing with Yankees

The reigning Ivy League Player and Pitcher of the Year Mike Ford has signed with the New York Yankees as an undrafted free agent, it was announced Tuesday.  Ford, who played for the Tigers between 2011-13, has been allocated to the Class A Short-Season affiliate in Staten Island of the New York-Penn League and will forego his senior year at Princeton.

After going undrafted in the June MLB First-Year Draft, Ford joined the Cotuit Kettlers of the Cape Code Baseball League for the second consecutive year.

The pitcher/first baseman led the league in batting with a .407 average (35-for-86) in 26 games played, while amassing 22 runs, 18 RBI, 16 walks, seven doubles and five home runs. On the mound, he was 1-0 with nine strikeouts over 7.2 innings.

Ford is the second Princeton player to be signed this year, following Zak Hermans ’13 who was drafted by the Chicago Cubs.

A two-time All-America, Ford had an unprecedented 2013 campaign. He was the first Tiger to be named a John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award finalist and a Gregg Olson Award semifinalist, along with earning an ABCA Northeast Region pitcher and All-Ivy League First Team honors. Ford is the only player in Ivy history to earn Player, Pitcher and Rookie of the Year in a career and was the first to be named Player and Pitcher of the Year in the same season.
