Princeton All-America Mike Ford was named one of three finalists for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, it was announced Saturday by the National College Baseball Hall of Fame. The junior is the first Tiger to be a finalist for the honor.

After being selected as one of 12 players nationally to the watch list, the pitcher/first baseman’s stellar season has garnered him a spot as a finalist.

The three-time All-Ivy selection and 2013 Ivy League Player and Pitcher of the Year is also up for another national accolade, having been named a Gregg Olson Award semifinalist.

Ford batted .320 (47-for-147) with 38 RBI, 31 walks and six home runs, while going 6-0 on the mound with a 0.98 ERA. In nine starts, he tossed five complete games and a shutout over 64 innings. The righty also tallied 32 strikeouts, gave up only seven earned runs and opponents hit .191 against him.

Joining Ford as finalists are Marco Gonzales of Gonzaga and Michael Lorenzen of Cal State Fullerton.

Pitcher/first baseman Gonzales, the first round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals, led Gonzaga with 106 innings pitched and finished 7-3 with a 2.80 ERA. At the plate he led the Zags with a .311 batting average. For his efforts he was named West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Year.

Reliever/outfielder Lorenzen was drafted with the 38th overall pick by the Reds in last week’s MLB First-Year Player Draft. He batted .335 with a team-leading seven home runs and 54 RBI for the super regional participant Titans. On the mound, he fashioned a 1.99 ERA with a 3-0 record and 19 saves.

The winner of the John Olerud Award will be named on June 29 in Lubbock, Texas as part of the College Baseball’s Night of Champions. The event also features the announcement of the winners of the National Pitcher of the Year and Brooks Wallace Award. The Johnny Bench Award and Dick Howser Trophy are also presented, as well as the 2013 National College Baseball Hall of Fame inductions.
