Olson Award Release

Riding the heels of his historic campaign, Princeton’s Mike Ford has been named a semifinalist for the inaugural Gregg Olson Award. He is one of the 46 candidates selected for college baseball’s “Breakout Player of the Year” award.

The award is named after former Auburn Tiger pitcher Gregg Olson, who became one of the top collegiate players in the nation after an initial season filled with only mixed success. Olson went on to become a two-time All-America, first round draft pick, American League Rookie of the Year and MLB All-Star.

A list of finalists will be announced on Monday, June 3 in conjunction with the conclusion of NCAA Regional play. The winner of the award will be named in Omaha, Neb. during the College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park from June 15-26.

This is the second national award Ford has been nominated for, as he is one of 12 players up for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award.

In 2013 Ford became the first player to win both Ivy League Player and Pitcher of the Year honors in the same season and a career. He is also the only player to win all three top league honors, earning Rookie of the Year in 2011. The junior also was a unanimous double First-Team All-Ivy selection at pitcher and first base.

His breakout season saw him go 6-0 on the mound and boast a 0.98 ERA, fourth-best in all of NCAA Division I. Ford also nearly won the triple crown in league play, with Ivy-bests in homers (5) and RBI (22), but finished second in batting average (.394) to teammate Alec Keller.
