One week before Princeton will welcome the top two teams in the nation to Lake Carnegie for the annual Goldthwait and Vogel Cup regatta, the fourth-ranked men’s lightweights will make the short trip to Philadelphia to take on both Penn and Georgetown in the Wood-Hammond Trophy regatta.

This will be the 70th year for the Wood-Hammond Trophy, which is given annually to the winner of the Penn-Princeton varsity eight race. Princeton leads the all-time series 57-12, and has won each of the last seven meetings. Georgetown will also be part of the race, though the Hoyas are not eligible for the Wood-Hammond Trophy.

For Princeton, it is an opportunity to get back on the winning track after a tough morning in Ithaca last weekend. Third-ranked Cornell earned wins in the varsity eight, second varsity and the freshman eight during the Platt Cup regatta.

Now in the final stretch of their season, the Tigers can put that work in overdrive as they see the Eastern Sprints looming on the horizon. A good week of training will lead Princeton into Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River, where racing will begin at 10 am with the freshman eight race. Racing will continue every 20 minutes, and the varsity eight is scheduled for 10:40 in the morning.

This will be Princeton’s final road competition during the regular season. Lake Carnegie will serve as host for Harvard and Yale next weekend, as well as the May 5 finale against both Columbia and Delaware.
