2012-13 Season Preview
Last year, the Keystone Open served as a launching point for the likes of Daniel Kolodzik and Garrett Frey, and head coach Chris Ayres hopes it can do the same for several other Tigers this season.
One year after placing an Ivy-best fourth at the Keystone Open, hosted by Penn at the Palestra, Princeton returns to compete with 14 other programs at the one-day event. A tentative schedule can be found at the bottom of this release.
Six Tigers placed last year, including Frey, who reached the final at 125. Junior co-captain Dan Santoro (174) also placed fourth in the event. Frey reached the finals at 125, where he fell 8-3 to nationally ranked Levi Mele of Northwestern. It's possible that Frey could see Mele once again, as both are likely to compete at 133 this year.
Princeton is coming off a solid start to its season last weekend at the Binghamton Open, where four Tigers placed. Three (Abe Ayala, Scott Gibbons and Judd Ziegler) were freshmen making their collegiate debuts, while the fourth was senior co-captain Zach Bintliff.
Both Ayala and Ziegler compete at 165, and both could see a pair of Top 20 opponents in 14th-ranked Pierce Harger of Northwestern and 20th-ranked Ryan LeBlanc of Indiana. Both Bintliff (149) and Gibbons (184) could see more open fields, as neither weight features a competitor currently ranked inside the Top 20.
