Adding another accomplishment to an already outstanding fall campaign, Princeton senior Matija Pecotic won the USTA/ITA Regional singles title Tuesday morning at Yale, defeating Columbia's Winston Lin.

It was the third time Pecotic and Lin have met this fall. The first was in the final of the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational in mid-September, and one week later, they met again in the semifinals of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Men's College Invitational. Pecotic won both of those, and he made it three in a row by defeating Lin 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

"Matija had a great tournament, and by winning the regional he achieved a personal goal that has great significance to him," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "Winston played a good match today. He is a tough competitor and it's very challenging to beat such a good player three times in the fall. We're looking forward to the final two weekends of fall competition."

Pecotic is now 18-1 in singles play during the fall, his only loss coming in the semifinals of the ITA All-America tournament after becoming the first Princeton player since 1982 to make it that far in that event.

The regional champion receives an automatic bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships Nov. 8-11 at the National Tennis Center in New York, though Pecotic already had that wrapped up by making the semifinal of the ITA All-America.

Princeton will be off this weekend before resuming the fall schedule at the Texas Fall Invitational the first weekend of November. The team will split the following weekend between the USTA/ITA national tournament in New York and the Lakewood Ranch Invitational in Sarasota, Fla.
