Golf Teams Head North for April's First Tournaments
For the first time in 2014, both Princeton golf teams will be in action on the same weekend as the women continue their spring campaign at the Seton Hall Pirate Invitational and the men begin their spring at the Met Intercollegiate, hosted by Yale.
For the men, it's the first of three events leading up to the Ivy League Championship at Baltusrol on the last weekend of the month. Saturday's Met Intercollegiate is a one-day, 36-hole event co-hosted by Century Country Club and Old Oaks Country Club, both in Purchase, N.Y. The first 18 holes will be at Century followed by another round at Old Oaks.
The event will feature six of the eight Ivy programs, including Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard and Yale, plus Georgia and Army. Georgia is presently ranked No. 5 in the nation by Golfweek. Princeton has competed at the Century Intercollegiate, which was a Yale-hosted event at Century Country Club, each of the last three springs with a high finish of third in 2012.
Three players from the defending Ivy champion men's team are back this spring, including Ivy medalist Greg Jarmas, Nick Ricci and Matt Gerber.
The women opened their season last week with a challenging field at the Briar's Creek Invitational. This week's event will take Princeton to the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., for the Seton Hall-hosted event, which is the next-to-last tournament for the Princeton women before the Ivy League Championship at Baltusrol at month's end.
Princeton will be one of 18 fivesomes in the event, including four other Ivy teams as Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth and Penn are in the field. Bucknell, Boston University, Central Connecticut State, Hofstra, Long Island, Rutgers, Sacred Heart, Siena, St. John's, William & Mary and two teams from Seton Hall make up the rest of the field.
Kelly Shon, Alexandra Wong and Sydney Kersten are the three players back this spring from Princeton's runner-up team at the 2013 Ivy League Championship.
The women's teams will play one round Saturday and one Sunday with both rounds beginning at 9 a.m.
