PRINCETON, N.J. (11/17/12) - No. 3 Clarkson scored at 1:33 in overtime to defeat the Princeton women's hockey team 2-1 on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Hobey Baker Rink.
The Tigers looked good and kept pace the Golden
Knights throughout the game.
The Knights struck first however, with less than two minutes
left in the first period. Junior Carly Mercer scored the first goal of the
game, assisted by junior Brittany Styner.
Princeton stayed on top of the Green & Gold despite
having to kill off two penalties in the second period. With eight shots on
netminder Erica Howe, it was evident that the Tigers had no decrease in their
momentum.
With less than nine minutes left to go in the third, senior
Kelly Cooke intercepted the puck in the neutral zone and skated in on Howe but
was tripped by a defender resulting in a penalty shot. Cooke skated up to Howe once more and fired the puck over
her shoulder into the top right corner to tie the game. Princeton goalie Kimberly Newell stayed
strong and put together seven saves before the third period came to an end.
As the overtime session started the Princeton defense did a
great job of keeping the puck out of the zone. A misstep on a line change didn't
give the Tigers a full defense and Clarkson capitalized as Mercer fed junior Jamie
Lee Rattray for the overtime goal at 1:33.
Howe finished the game with 21 saves as her team improves to
6-0 in the ECAC and 12-2 overall.
Newell stopped 29 for the Tigers, who fall to 3-5-2 overall
and 1-5-2 in league play.
The Tigers play a pair of non-conference games with Ohio
State next weekend at Hobey Baker Rink.
