On July 10, Princeton rising junior Kelly Shon fired a 71 in a U.S. Women's Amateur qualifier at Somerset Hills Country Club in Bernardsville, N.J., earning a spot in next month's tournament.
The score was the lowest at that qualifier, earning one of four places available at the Somerset Hills site.
The U.S. Women's Amateur Championship will take place at The Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio from August 6-12. Similar to the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship in which Shon competed earlier this summer, 156 players will compete over two rounds of stroke play, and the top 64 competitors will begin match play on August 8.
Qualifying for the championship will continue through July 19. At the Country Club of York on July 9, Shon's former teammate, Kate Scarpetta '11, earned one of the two alternate spots available at that qualifier by shooting a 74.
The 2012 U.S. Women's Amateuer is Shon's 10th USGA event over her career, including three U.S. Junior Girls championships (2007-09), three U.S. Women's Amateurs (2010-12), two U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links tournaments (2011-12), and two U.S. Women's Opens (2011-12).
While at Princeton, Shon won two regular-season tournament titles this past season and has been an NCAA East Regional individual qualifier in each of her first two campaigns. She was a first-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 2011 and second-teamer in 2012.
