Princeton rising senior Kelly Shon defeated Mississippi's Alison Hovatter 6&5 Wednesday afternoon to advance out of the first round of match play in the USGA Women's Amateur Public Links Championship in Norman, Okla. at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
Shon, the bracket's 11th seed, won holes one, four, five, six, nine, 10 and 12 and lost only the eighth hole, clinching the match by squaring the 13th with Hovatter, the 54th seed, to stand six up with five holes to play.
It's the third straight summer Shon has played in this tournament, and she has already matched her best performance. Shon has advanced out of the stroke play portion of the event all three times, but after her freshman season she was unable to get out of the first match-play round. She won her Round of 64 match last year but fell in the Round of 32.
Shon will have the opportunity to make her furthest advance of her career at 11 a.m. ET Thursday, when she takes on 22nd-seeded Whitney French, a 2012 Oregon State alumna, in the Round of 32.
