Indiana and the Princeton women's water polo team were never more than two goals apart Sunday afternoon, but the Hoosiers scored last to pick up the 11-10 win in the CWPA title game.
Though Princeton entered the tournament with the higher national ranking, No. 9 to Indiana's No. 12, the Hoosiers had the No. 1 seed in the event, and both teams got past their first two opponents to set up the one-versus-two battle for the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Princeton last led Sunday at 10-9 just before the midway point of the fourth quarter, but Indiana kept Princeton off the board the rest of the way. The Hoosiers went ahead 11-10 with just more than a minute to play and held off one last possession from Princeton to gain the postseason berth.
Despite the defeat, Princeton's record of 31-2 is the best in program history, setting the program mark for most wins and fewest losses. The Tigers won 29 games a year ago and lost as few as six games on four occasions, most recently in 2013. Princeton was seeking its third straight NCAA appearance, but Indiana will instead play in the NCAAs for the third time in its history and the first time since 2011.
