Baseball Takes Nightcap 6-5 in Doubleheader Split with Michigan

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (3/8/14) – The Princeton baseball team split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against Michigan at the New York Mets’ Spring Training complex. After dropping the opening game 8-2, Princeton took the nightcap 6-5.

GAME 1 (Box Score)

In the opening game of two, the Wolverines built an early lead by scoring two runs in four of the first five innings. Kyle Jusick his a two-run single in the first and that gave Michigan a lead it would not relinquish.

Princeton scored two runs in the game. The first came in the second inning when Peter Owens scored on a Brett Geren single and the second came in the eighth when Owens was pushed home on a bases-loaded walk. Geren and Nick Hernandez each had two hits in the game as the Tiger lineup accounted for two runs on nine hits.

Cameron Mingo suffered the loss in his season debut. He allowed two runs on four hits over two innings. Chris Bodurian pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Princeton was outhit 12-9 in the loss.

Game 2 (Box Score)

The Tigers bounced back to win a back-and-forth one-run game in the nightcap. Princeton freshmen shined in the win, accounting for nine of the team’s 14 hits and two strong pitching performances.

Princeton took the lead for good with a three-run seventh in which Princeton used a double, triple and home run to go ahead. Alec Keller led off the inning with a double and scored on a Danny Baer triple to tie the game at 4-4 at the time. Baer would give Princeton the lead for good when he scored on a wild pitch, and Paul Tupper added a much-needed insurance run with his first collegiate home run down the left field line.

Baer, Tupper, Nick Hernandez, and Zack Belski each had two hits in the win with Baer driving in a pair of runs. Alec Keller led the team with three hits and along with Baer scored two runs.

Two Princeton freshmen combined for the win on the mound. Starter Keelan Smithers went five innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits while fanning three. Bryce Keller came on for the final four innings and earned the wins. He allowed just an unearned run on three hits in notching his first college win.

Up Next

Princeton is now 2-4 overall after the split and has taken two of the first three games of the series. The teams play the final game of the series on Sunday at 11 a.m.
