Penn Sweeps Sunday Twinbill From @PUSoftball

In a pivotal series for the Ivy South race, Penn took two games Sunday from the Princeton softball team and three of four on the weekend. Penn took the opener 9-2 and the nightcap 5-4.

The Quakers (20-15) now lead the division by four games over Princeton (21-15), Columbia and Cornell, all of whom are 6-6 in the league while the Quakers are 10-2.

In game one, Penn broke it open with a four-run fifth inning, turning what was a 3-2 game into a 7-2 advantage. Alex Peyton (6-6) took the loss for Princeton, going 4 1/3 innings giving up six hits and four walks while earning four of the seven runs on her watch.

In game two, Princeton never led but kept things tight, tying Penn at 2-2 on a two-run shot by Alex Peyton in the top of the third. But Penn made it 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth, getting a solo shot from Samantha Erosa and an RBI single from Brooke Melendez.

Princeton pulled within 4-3 with a Maddie Cousens solo home run in the fifth, but the Quakers got it back in the bottom of the sixth on a Jessica Arneson sacrifice fly after two singles and a walk. Princeton was able to make it 5-4 in the top of the seventh when Alyssa Schmidt drove home a single from Rachel Rendina, but Princeton left runners on first and second at game's end.

Shanna Christian (7-4) went the distance in game two, giving up eight hits and two walks while earning three of Penn's five runs.

The Tigers will come home to face Lehigh Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Princeton's final non-league twinbill of the regular season. A return to Ivy play will come Saturday and Sunday at '95 Field against Columbia.
