STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Kelly Shon shot a 77 on Friday's second day of the NCAA East Regional at Penn State, putting her five shots off the pace to grab one of the two individual bids to the NCAA finals.
The score ties Shon for 31st at +5 for the tournament after her even-par 72 Thursday.
Shon bogeyed the second, fifth, ninth, 15th and 17th holes Friday. She had parred all of those holes in Thursday's opening round except for the second, which she bogeyed, and the ninth, which she birdied. She also picked up birdies on 13 and 18 Thursday, parring those holes the second time around.
Georgia State's Charlotte Lorenzen and Augusta State's Natalie Wille, both at even par, are the leaders for the two individual bids to the NCAA finals.
Shon could have among the top finishes for any Tiger in NCAA competition, whether as an individual or part of a team. The only Princeton players who finished higher than 31st in NCAA play were Mary Moan '97, who placed fifth at the 1997 East Regional and 21st at the 1996 East Regional, Susannah Aboff '09, who placed 23rd at the 2009 East Regional, and Avery Kiser '05, who placed 28th a thte 2005 East Regional. Aboff also had the lowest score to par for any Tiger in NCAA play in that tournament, finishing at 10 over.
Shon's final round will begin at 8:25 a.m. Saturday. Complete results from the 2012 NCAA East Regional's first two rounds can be found here.
