Rigler Earns Third Straight CWPA Southern Player of the Year Honor
As the Princeton women's water polo team prepares to begin its CWPA title defense Friday at Bucknell, the Tigers can celebrate a third straight Southern Division Player of the Year honor and four first-team all-division honorees.
For the third consecutive year, Katie Rigler has been named the CWPA Southern Division Player of the Year, becoming only the second Tiger in the program's history to win the honor at least three times. Elyse Colgan '07 swept the honor across the four years of her career, and Princeton players have won 12 of the 15 honors since 2000.
Rigler, a senior who was also named first-team All-Southern Division, leads Princeton with 62 goals and has scored on 51.7 percent of her shots this season. Rigler ranks in the top three on the team in assists (27, third), steals (31, third), and ejections drawn (31, third), and she accounts for 39 of Princeton's 55 sprint wins on the season.
Along with Rigler, senior Molly McBee, sophomore Diana Murphy and sophomore goalkeeper Ashleigh Johnson were named first-team All-Southern Division, tying a program best with four first-team all-division honorees. Princeton previously had four players selected in 2005.
Rigler, McBee (44) and Murphy (44) are three of the four Tigers, along with Ashley Hatcher (48), who have scored at least 40 goals on the season. McBee leads the team with 36 assists, and Murphy's 38 ejections drawn lead the team as well. Johnson has started 27 of the team's 30 games in goal, has a .720 save percentage while holding opponents to an average of five goals per game, and ranks second on the team with 32 steals.
Princeton will begin play at the CWPA Championship Friday at 1:30 p.m. against Harvard. For the complete tournament schedule, click here.
