Leading up to the opening of the 2014 season, GoPrincetonTigers.com will feature a five-part preseason women’s water polo series. Part one opens with head coach Luis Nicolao covering the upcoming schedule.

2014 Schedule

The two-time reigning Eastern champion Princeton women’s water polo team will make a run at an unprecedented third straight title and NCAA tournament berth in 2014. Defending their crown will feature another challenging schedule for the Tigers, as they play all but six games at DeNunzio Pool, including one on ESPNU, and face several teams that are in the national top-20 year-in and year-out.

The season opens hosting an eight-team field at the annual Princeton Invitational from Feb. 8-9. The Tigers kick things off with Wagner at 10 a.m. on Saturday and will face Iona, NYAC and VMI over the two-day tournament.

The Bucknell Invitational (Feb. 15-16) and MAAC/CWPA Crossover hosted at Harvard (Feb. 22-23) will be the sites of Princeton’s next eight games. During that span the Tigers will face UC San Diego, who they beat in the fifth-place game at the 2013 NCAA tournament, and perennial East Coast foe Michigan.

On Sunday, Mar. 2 the Tigers will take to the national stage for a meeting with rival Harvard live on ESPNU at 11 a.m. at DeNunzio Pool.

A return trip to Cambridge, Mass. for the Harvard Invite from Mar. 8-9 precedes Princeton’s annual Southern California Spring Break road trip. The week kicks off at the San Diego State’s Aztec Invitational (Mar. 15-16) and concludes at the Loyola Marymount-hosted LMU Zumo Invite (Mar. 21-22). Meetings with Loyola Marymount, San Diego State, San Jose State and a second with UC San Diego headline the eight-game outing.

The regular season will close with a string of conference games with Senior Day coming on Sunday, Apr. 6 versus George Washington at 1 p.m.

The Southern Division Championship will send the Tigers to Harvard for a third time, running from Apr. 12-13, and the CWPA Championship, formerly Eastern Championship, is set for Apr. 25-27 at Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa.

The end goal will be another trip to Los Angeles for the NCAA Championship at Southern California’s Uytengsu Aquatics Center from May 9-11.
