Top-Seeded Women's Water Polo Looks to Defend Southern Crown This Weekend

Coming off its CWPA Southern Division regular season title, the 12th-ranked Princeton women’s water polo team travels this weekend to the Southern Division Championship hosted at Brown in Providence, R.I. from Apr. 13-14. The Tigers (20-5, 5-0 Southern) are the reigning Southern champions and will look defend their crown as the top seed. Princeton faces fifth-seeded Bucknell and fourth-seeded George Washington in the opening rounds on Saturday.

Last Time Out: Princeton captured the regular season Southern Division title with a weekend sweep. The Tigers topped Mercyhurst, 13-1, and Harvard, 17-9, on Apr. 6, before employing a late rally to propel past Bucknell, 14-5, the next day. With the 3-0 final outing at DeNunzio Pool, Princeton improved to a perfect 5-0 in divisional play.

On Deck: After a week break in play, Princeton heads to Michigan for the three-day CWPA Eastern Championship from Apr. 26-28 in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Tigers will aim to defend their Eastern crown and earn their second consecutive berth to the NCAA Championship.

The Eastern Championship will feature all teams from both the Southern and Western Divisions. Seeding will be based on finishes at the divisional tournaments.

Soroka Earns Player of the Week Accolades: Senior center Saranna Soroka earned her second career Southern Player of the Week honor following her five-goal, five-steal and three-assist performance in the Tigers final homestand sweep.

The tri-captain picked up Princeton’s seventh weekly honor this season and third Player of the Week accolade.

Top-Ranked in the East: The Tigers enter Southerns tabbed at No. 12 with 38 points. The squad has teetered between No. 10-12 all year and are the highest ranked East Coast program in the Women’s Varsity National Top 20.

A Look at the Southern Division: Princeton finished the regular season at 5-0 with 10 points. No other team suffered less than two losses over conference play, as both Brown and Harvard were slotted in second place at 3-2. George Washington, Bucknell and Mercyhurst finished fourth through sixth, respectively.

Scouting Bucknell: Princeton is coming off a 14-5 victory over Bucknell (5-15, 2-3 Southern) to close out the regular season. Three Bison players have scored 25 goals or more, with Hannah Sunday’s team-leading 31 goals headlining the offensive efforts. In the cage, Rena Heim has started all 20 games and has 189 saves, a .495 saves percentage and 193 goals against.

Scouting George Washington: The Colonials of George Washington are coming off a split last weekend to finish the regular season at 13-12, 2-3 Southern. Princeton played GWU twice already, handing them a 20-6 defeat at home on Feb. 9, before dropping the Colonials 15-3 in Washington, D.C. on Mar. 8. Six George Washington players have scored 20 or more goals, with Hannah Cox’s 55 goals guiding the scoring efforts. The Colonials have seen three different goalies see action this year, with Chandler Vilander taking over primary goaltending duties. In 84 quarters played, she’s tallied 143 saves, a 10.10 goals against average and 212 goals against.
