ALL-ACCESS: TIGER WRESTLING

Thrilling victories were the calling card for the Princeton wrestling team throughout a successful 2013-14 season. The final weekend, however, saw too many of those close decisions go the other way. Penn earned a share of second place in the Ivy League with a 22-9 win at Dillon Gym in the Tigers’ regular season finale.

Princeton concludes the season with an 11-4 dual meet record, meaning it had both double-digit wins and fewer than five losses for the first time since the 1980-81 season.

The Tigers got victories from senior Garrett Frey, junior Adam Krop and sophomore Abram Ayala against the Quakers. Frey, one of six members of the Class of 2014 to be honored during Senior Day, built an early lead against McKendry Bade, then scored a late escape to clinch a 7-6 win. It was Frey’s first win since his return from injury, and sets him up with momentum entering the 2014 EIWA Championships (March 8-9 • The Palestra).

Penn scored an 8-5 win at 141, but Krop shut out Andrew Lenzi 3-0 at 149 to keep the Tigers within one team point. The junior, who leads the team with 28 wins, scored an escape in the second and clinched the match with a third-period takedown.

Sophomore Kevin Moylan found himself trailing Raamiah Bethea early in their match at 157, but he scored a takedown and a pair of escapes to get back even at 6-6. Bethea had the final takedown, though, and took the match 9-7.

Penn followed that with three straight wins, including a two-point win at 174 and a three-point win at 184 to seal the team win. Ayala went to overtime at 197, and rode Frank Mattiace to gain an advantage heading into the second rideout period. After forcing a stall call, Ayala added an escape point for a 3-1 win.

Penn closed the match with a 3-2 win at heavyweight, as Steven Graziano scored the only takedown in a 3-2 victory.
