Freshman Kelsey Koelzer had two points through the 2013 portion of the Princeton schedule. In 2014, she has three already; her two goals and one assist led the women's hockey team to a 4-1 win over UConn Thursday night in Baker Rink.

Koelzer scored twice in the third period and assisted on Sally Butler's tying goal in the second period to lead Princeton to its eighth win of the season. Goaltender Kimberly Newell made 22 saves for Princeton, including 13 in the first period.

UConn scored the only goal of a wild, end-to-end first period. On the Huskies’ second power play of the period, Sara MacDonell fired a shot from the right circle that was saved by Newell, but the rebound came out in front and was put home by Leah Buress.

That would be all the scoring of a very even period, but Princeton came out with a far more aggressive mentality in the second period. The Tigers got off the first 11 shots of the period and evened the score on Butler’s second goal of the season. Freshman Kelsey Koelzer fired a shot through traffic from the point, and Butler deflected it past Sarah Moses for the tying goal.

It took a little extra time for the goal to get posted, though; officials reviewed the play to make sure Butler didn’t delect the shot with a high stick. After several minutes, the call was upheld and Princeton had its first goal of 2014.

Penalties thwarted their dominance of the period, though; UConn got a pair of late power plays, and while the Huskies didn’t capitalize on either, they were able to neutralize the Tigers’ aggression for the final five minutes of the period.

Midway through the third period, Princeton found its dominant level of play and scored three goals in 3:32 to put the game away. Koelzer scored the eventual game winner on a slapshot from the point, and Gabie Figueroa followed it up with another slapshot that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net.

Less than a minute after Figueroa's goal, Morgan Sly found Koelzer skating down the right side of the ice and sent a perfect lead pass. The freshman capped the best game of her young career by converting on the mini breakaway for the final score in a 4-1 win.

Princeton improved to 8-6-2 and will host UConn in the second game of the series Friday at 4 pm.
