NCAA Berth on the Line at Menís Water Polo CWPA Championship This Weekend

The 18th-ranked Princeton men’s water polo team heads to the three-day CWPA Championship from Nov. 22-24 in Providence, R.I this weekend. The Tigers are the sixth seed and will open with 11th-seeded Iona on Friday at 12:40 p.m.

Last Time Out:
After defeating Gannon, 15-8, to open the Southern Division Championship on Nov. 9, the top seeded and regular season Southern Division champion Tigers (19-5, 7-1) fell short to host Navy in the semifinals, 12-10.
• Princeton closed out the weekend with a third-place finish and a 9-7 victory over Mercyhurst the next day.

About the CWPA Championship:
• The CWPA Championship, formerly the Eastern Championship, is a 12-team conference tournament featuring both the Northern and Southern divisions.
• The top two finishers at the Northern and Southern championships earned first round byes.
• The winner of CWPAs will advance to the NCAA Play-In Game on Thursday, Dec. 5 at Stanford in hopes of moving onto the Final Four that weekend.

Princeton CWPA Championship History:
• The Tigers have won three CWPA Championships over program history, last taking home the title in 2011.
• Princeton is vying for the program’s fifth NCAA tournament appearance.

Leaders of the Pack: Senior Kurt Buchbinder and junior Drew Hoffenberg are the Tigers’ 2013 co-captains.

The Offense:
Drew Hoffenberg and Jovan Jeremic continue to pace the Tiger offense with 58 goals apiece. They are two of eight players tallying double figure scoring numbers on the year.
• Along with the attacking tandem, both Thomas Nelson and Kayj Shannon have 38 goals each to round out the team’s top scorers.

Controlling the Cage:
• Sophomore Alex Gow (11-4) has served as Princeton’s primary goalie this year, tallying 174 saves and a .578 saves percentage.
• Princeton’s four-man goalie rotation sports a .573 saves percentage on the year.

Trending Now:
Princeton is outscoring opponents 266-216.
Jovan Jeremic is riding a seven-game scoring streak.
Sam Butler finished Southerns with eight assists; he has dished at least one assist in his last five appearances.
Drew Hoffenberg has scored 10 goals over the last four games, each multi-goal performances.
Kurt Buchbinder has won his last 10 sprints, including perfect 4-for-4 outings in the last two games.

Scouting Iona:
• Iona (7-24, 4-8 Northern) enters the CWPA Championship with an at-large bid after finishing in fifth place at the Northern Division Championship.
• Five Gaels have scored 23 or more goals this season with Jake Lloyd’s 54 headlining the offense.
• In goal, Stefen Hill serves as the team’s primary goalie with 186 saves, a 0.42 saves percentage, 253 goals against and an 11.50 goals against average.
• Friday’s meeting between the Tigers and Gales will be the third of the year. Princeton earned victories in both contests, 11-6 on Sept. 15, and 13-9 on Oct. 26.
• The Tigers are undefeated all-time versus Iona, owning the series 19-0.

On Deck:
• With a victory over Iona, Princeton will advance to the quarterfinals and face fourth-seeded Harvard at 6 p.m. Friday.
• A loss would send the Tigers to the consolation bracket and eliminate them from the postseason.
