Near the top of a crowded leaderboard, Princeton junior Kelly Shon fired a 1-under 71 Thursday at the NCAA East Regional at Auburn.
That was good enough to tie her for 14th place after the first round, but it was a couple shots short of where she would need to be to get one of the two individual berths to the NCAA finals if the tournament ended today. Through the first 18 holes, those bids would go to Tennessee's Erica Popson, the co-leader after the first round at -5, and Tulsa's Shu-Yin Liu, who was 3-under and is playing as an individual like Shon.
The individual bids are given to the top two players on the leaderboard who aren't on one of the top eight teams in the standings.
Shon made par on 15 of her 18 holes Thursday. She fell to 1-over after a bogey on the par-4 third hole, but she made birdie on a pair of par-fives, holes seven and 12, to move into red numbers.
Shon and the rest of the field will play a round each day on Friday and Saturday before the advancing teams and individuals are determined. Shon's second round will begin at 1:45 p.m. ET.
