Princeton will return to Lake Carnegie this weekend to take on Penn and Dartmouth for the Class of 1984 Plaque.

On May 19, they will all see each other once again. But for the regular season, the Princeton open rowing team will conclude its Ivy League schedule Saturday morning when it takes on both Dartmouth and Penn on Lake Carnegie in the annual Class of 1984 Point Trophy regatta.

Unlike the rest of its Cup competitions, the Class of 1984 Point Trophy goes to the program with the best combined finish of the varsity eight, second varsity and varsity four; Princeton can view it as a prelude to the NCAA Championships, when those three boats will be scored together in the race for a national title.

Princeton has retained the trophy in all 28 years of the regatta, and it has won the varsity eight race in 27 of the 28 meetings (Dartmouth won in 1986). Last year, Princeton won each race on the Schuylkill River, though the Big Green pushed the Tigers and finished within seven seconds.

The Tigers will be looking to build off the momentum generated from last weekend’s victories over Yale at the Eisenberg Cup; after all, Ivy Sprints will be only three weeks away following this Ivy League finale.

“With two more regular season races before the Ivy Sprints, I think all crews feels the pressure to keep improving and finding speed,” sophomore Anna Ionson said. “That pressure has translated into a lot of energy and determination in practice and everyone is going for it. It is and exciting time in the season.”

It will also be exciting for the team to remain home on a Friday. Since its season-opening wins over both Brown and Ohio State, the sixth-ranked Tigers have been on the road three straight weeks. They will remain home for their final two weekends, including a May 4 showdown with No. 13 Michigan.

“I think everyone is excited to race on Lake Carnegie again,” Ionson said. “It is definitely easier with busy academic schedules. More importantly, I think everyone is very proud of the boathouse facilities, race course, and Princeton Crew program as a whole, and it will be exciting to host another team.”

Racing will begin at 10:40 am, following the men’s lightweight showdown with Harvard and Yale. Racing will take place every 20 minutes, with the varsity eight race scheduled for 11:40 am.
