Box Score: Game One
Box Score: Game Two

The Princeton baseball team made its chances of advancing to the Ivy League Championship Series a little more difficult after being swept by first-place Columbia Saturday. An 8-2 hit differential by the Lions opened up the series with a 4-0 loss, marking the first defeat for starting pitcher Zak Hermans in Ivy play this year. Game two saw the Tigers open with the early lead, but things unraveled in the sixth and ninth innings and Columbia won 7-1.

Turning Point of the Game: Ultimately the crux of the game came in the top of the first of game one, when Alex Black hit a solo home run to left field to score the eventual game-winner for the Lions. It was only second long ball hit off Hermans over eight appearances this year. As Princeton’s offense was unproductive, Columbia added insurance runs in the fifth to seal the victory.

Game two saw the Tiger offense get going immediately. With a pair of outs and a runner on second, Steve Harrington hit an RBI single up the middle to prop Princeton to a 1-0 advantage. As starter Kevin Link held Columbia scoreless and limited them to one hit through four, Princeton’s offense silenced and was unable to further protect its lead. The Lions took advantage of their ensuing opportunities, tying the game in the fifth and scoring a pair on three hits and an error in the sixth. Things unraveled further in the ninth as the visitors added four more runs on five hits and an error.

Player of the Game: Harrington started and played in right field in game two. He went 3-for-4 and accounted for Princeton’s lone run off his first inning RBI single. The outfielder got distance on all three of hits, as the first went up the middle and the other two were deep to the right side.

Divisional Standings: With the sweep, Columbia now is three games ahead of the Tigers at 11-3. Princeton sits at 8-6 and will need a sweep Sunday and some help next week to remain in the hunt for the Gehrig Division title.

On Deck: Princeton (11-24, 8-6) and Columbia (19-16, 11-3) conclude the four-game series on Sunday, Apr. 21. First pitch is at 12 noon at Clarke Field.
