CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (3/16/13) - No. 9 Virginia handed the Princeton women's lacrosse team just its second loss of the season in a 9-7 game at Klockner Stadium on Saturday, March 16.

With 13 games in this series (43%) being decided by one goal, one didn't have to guess that today's game would come down to the wire.

Junior Sarah Lloyd was the only Tiger to score in the first half, as Virginia stepped out with a 7-2 lead in the first half. The Cavaliers scored three unanswered goals in the first seven minutes. Lloyd put Princeton on the board at 21:40 and scored again at 14:50, sandwiching a goal by Morgan Stephens. Virginia ended the half scoring three goals in the final 6:04.

Princeton changed things around in the center circle after being outdrawn 7-2 in the first half. Sophomore Erin McMunn took the place at the center and Princeton would win six of nine draws on the half and outscored Virginia 5-3.

Casey Bocklet opened the second half with a goal at 28:19 to give Virginia its largest lead of the game 7-5.

Back-to-back draw controls wins led to two Princeton goals in less than two minutes. Anya Gersoff delivered an unbelievable pass to senior Jaci Gassaway for a goal at 25:07 and Mary-Kate Sivilli scored unassisted to cut the Tiger' deficit to three with 23:37 left to play.

Virginia's Dana Boyle scored three minutes later but Princeton responded with two goals to come within two, 8-6. Sophomore Erin Slifer tallied an assisted goal and then set up Gassaway for a goal after Lloyd caused a turnover and Princeton quickly cleared.

With 10 minutes left to play and Virginia with possession, the Cavaliers called a timeout and drew up a play with Ashlee Warner scoring.

The next seven minutes would go back-and-forth as Lloyd and senior Charlotte Davis put two on frame that were stopped by Kim Kolarik. On the other end junior Caroline Franke made two stops on shots by Bocklet and Boyle. A shot by Courtney Swan that hit the post was picked up by Caroline Rehfuss to give Princeton possession and they would score on it. McMunn dodged her defender on the left side of the goal and buried one behind Kolarik with 2:04 remaining.

Princeton called a timeout but lost the next draw. After one minute of possession, Virginia turned the ball over. The Tigers put two more shots on net but Kolarik stood strong stopping both and keeping Princeton from getting any closer than two goals.

Princeton outshot Virginia 26-13 with a 14-9 differential in the second half. Ground balls, draw controls and caused turnovers were nearly even.

Slifer had a three-point game with one goal and two helpers. Lloyd and Gassaway both scored twice. Franke made a career-high nine saves in her first career start for the Tigers, as the Tigers fall to 3-2. Both of Princeton's losses have been to teams ranked in the top-15.

Bocklet had a three-point game with two goals and one assist. Stephens, Warner and Boyle each scored twice. Kolarik stopped 10 shots as Virginia improves to 4-4 on the season.

Princeton visits in-state opponent Rutgers on Tuesday, March 19 for a 3 p.m., game.
