Freshman Scott Gibbons continued the strong start to his collegiate career with a third-place finish Sunday at the 2012 Keystone Open. It was the highlight performance during a tough day for Princeton, which competed without half of its projected starting lineup because of injury.

Gibbons is expected to compete for a starting spot at 184, and he has done nothing to hurt his chances over the first two weeks. After placing fifth at the Binghamton Open last weekend, he won five of six matches Sunday to claim third. His last two wins came over higher-seeded wrestlers, and both came by fall.

He won once in the championship round, but fell in the second round to Harvard's Cameron Croy 3-1. He bounced back with two wins in wrestlebacks, then took on third-seeded Clint Morrison of Rider. Morrison had defeated Gibbons last weekend, but the Tiger freshman avenged that in style with a first-period pin of Morrison. He topped second-seeded Ophir Bernstein of Brown with a third-period pin to claim third.

For the season, Gibbons has nine wins and only four losses; of his four losses, three have come by one point, and the other came by two points. His wins including three falls and a pair of major decisions.

Senior co-captain Garrett Frey (133) had Princeton's only other win in the main draw, but he was eliminated by eventual champion Devon Lotito of Cal-Poly. Several wrestlers had wins in wrestlebacks, though none made it to the podium.

Princeton returns to the mats Saturday when it heads to Troy, N.Y., for the Northeast Duals.
