PRINCETON (9/18/12) - Sophomore Sam Butler of the 13th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team tallied seven goals, eight assists, five steals, three ejections drawn and a field block in aiding the Tigers to a third place finish at the North-South Invitational at Harvard over the weekend. For his performance, Butler garnered the September 17 Southern Division Player of the Week award for his first weekly honor from the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA).
Princeton went 2-1 over the weekend with Butler posting a pair of hat tricks as the Tigers upended Iona (16-6), fell to No. 19 and eventual North-South Invitational champion Brown (10-9 L) and took down Bucknell (13-9 W).
Against Iona in the tournament's opening game, he notched three goals, three assists, two steals and an ejection drawn against the Gaels. He tacked on a goal with three assists and a pair of ejections drawn against the Brown Bears, before wrapping up the Tigers' trek to Beantown with three goals, two assists, three steals and a field block in handling Southern Division nemesis Bucknell.
For the year, he has 10 goals, 18 assists, 16 steals and eight ejections drawn.
Princeton opens its CWPA Southern Division schedule this weekend with games at George Washington, Navy and Johns Hopkins.
