BOX SCORE

A pair of first-period goals and the 18th career shutout for goalie Laura Bellamy led the second-ranked Harvard Crimson to a 3-0 home win over the Princeton women's hockey team Friday night. For the Tigers, who fought hard against one of the top squads in the nation, it was their first ECAC contest since early December.

Princeton also welcomed back head coach Jeff Kampersal and goalie Kimberly Newell after the pair earned the silver and gold at the Women's U-18 Championships. Newell had her work cut out for her and held up well, making 40 saves on 43 shots through nearly 54 minutes of game action. She kept the game scoreless until Harvard's Michelle Picard scored 6:49 into the opening period.

Harvard, which improved to 12-1-1 with the win, doubled its advantage minutes later, when Kalley Armstrong took a pass from Dylanne Crugnale and scored at the 11:36 mark.

Princeton, which fell to 6-11-2 in the loss, kept the Crimson within reach for the next 30 minutes, but it was unable to get a shot past Bellamy. Crimson senior Jillian Dempsey finally moved the score to 3-0 early in the third, and the Crimson defense did the rest.

Princeton was outshot 45-20, though the Tigers improved their shot total in each period. Kelly Cooke had a team-high six shots for the Tigers, who will head to Dartmouth Saturday at 4 pm. The Big Green won a 3-1 showdown at Baker Rink earlier this season, though Princeton skated out of Thompson Arena with a 2-1 victory last season.

At this point of the season, every game is a crucial one for the Tigers, who are two points ahead of Brown for the eighth spot in the ECAC standings. Princeton could pick up two points on sixth-place Dartmouth with a road win tomorrow afternoon.
