In
a gritty battle of runs, it was DePaul that managed to outlast the Princeton
women's basketball team, 86-75, Friday evening in Chicago, Ill. The loss sends
the Tigers home riding a 7-5 record.
Three players scored in double figures, with
Niveen Rasheed leading the way with her fourth double-double of the year and
second in as many games. The senior guard led the squad with 21 points, going
6-for-9 from the stripe, and 12 rebounds. She also had team-highs in assists
(6) and steals (3) in 32 minutes of work.
Down 8-2 to open the game, Princeton responded with a 10-7
rally to come within a possession, 15-12, at 14:59.
Despite their efforts, the Tigers were unable to further
contain the Blue Demons to find their first advantage. DePaul employed four of
its seven three-pointers over the opening six minutes to maintain a
multi-possession advantage.
A Rasheed jumper at 11:23 made it a three-point game, 20-17,
but DePaul countered with an 8-0 run to again hold off the Tigers.
With 4:14 to play, DePaul earned its first double figure
advantage, 35-24, before an Alex Wheatley jumper and a Kate Miller triple countered
to make it a six-point game. Princeton's 5-0 rally was short lived, as the
Tigers were unable to parlay it into further points and DePaul went into
halftime holding a 41-30 lead.
Like the first half, the Blue Demons maintained control,
expanding their lead to as high as 13 at three different points.
Megan Bowen managed to cut down DPU's lead to eight, 48-40, at
17:05, but the Tigers again were unable to extend their stride and the Blue
Demons jutted back to a 13-point differential.
At 8:58, Kristen Helmstetter opened up an 8-0 run and the
Tigers cut DPU's lead to seven, 64-57.
Helmstetter tallied 12 points, going 5-for-7 from the field.
Their efforts again went unrewarded, as DePaul went on a 5-0
run of its own to reestablish its double-digit advantage, 71-59 with less than
six to play.
Blake Dietrick provided eight consecutive points to pull
Princeton within six, 75-67, and from that point forward the Tigers' battled
unsuccessfully to claw their way back into the game.
In her third career start, the point guard finished with a
career-high 16 points, going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.
The Tigers held a 51.8 percent (29-for-56) field goal
percentage to DePaul's 40.8 percent (29-for-71); however the Blue Demons shot
91.3 percent (21-for-23) from the stripe.
Princeton concludes 2012 with a New Year's Eve contest
versus Drexel at 2 p.m. at Jadwin Gym.
