Princeton Men's Volleyball • Ten Fast Facts

1) Men’s volleyball attained full varsity status in 1997. Prior to that season, the program had been a strong club team in the EIVA.

2) In its second season as a varsity program, Princeton won the EIVA (1998) and reached the NCAA Championships. Since then, Penn State has won every EIVA championship. Princeton defeated Penn State in the semifinal, and followed with a win over Rutgers-Newark in the final.

3) Glenn Nelson became the first NCAA Division I men’s volleyball coach in history to take two teams to the NCAA tournament in the same school year (Nelson led the Princeton women’s team to the NCAA first round in 1997). He won more than 500 matches as the men's coach, including its time as a club program.

4) Derek Devens ‘98 became just the second player in school history to earn All America honors in 1997 after leading the nation in hitting percentage (Marin Gjaja ‘91 was the other player).

5) Glenn Nelson was elected to the EIVA Hall of Fame this past season. He was honored during the league's championship weekend at Penn State.

6) Sam Shweisky was introduced as the second head coach of Princeton men’s volleyball in 2009. In his first year as head coach, he led the Tigers to the EIVA finals and was named the EIVA Bob Sweeney Head Coach of the Year.

7) Last season, more than 900 people crowded into Dillon Gym to watch the men's volleyball team host Penn State in an exciting four-set showdown. It was the largest crowd to watch a volleyball match in Dillon Gym in more than a decade.

8) Princeton will return a pair of first-team All-EIVA performers this season in senior outside hitter Pat Schwagler and junior opposite Cody Kessel. Schwagler led the EIVA in points per set last season, while Kessel battled through early injuries and played his best late in the year.

9) Junior libero Tony Ensbury returned to the U.S.A. Men's Junior National Volleyball Team this summer. He led the U.S. to the medal round at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Under-21 World Championship in Turkey.

10) Princeton returns six of seven starters this season from a team that reached the EIVA playoffs last year, and also has two incoming freshmen who were ranked in the 2013 Boys Fab 50 by Volleyball Magazine.
