Mason Serves Past Princeton For Volleyball Victory
Junior Michael Kvidahl recorded 10 service aces to help visiting George Mason to a 3-0 road win at Princeton Saturday afternoon in Dillon Gym.
The loss sends Princeton to 6-7 overall and 5-5 in the EIVA, and it leaves the Tigers in a deep mix of teams battling for one of the four postseason berths in league play. At 5-5, the team is one spot outside of the top four, though it still has three of its final four league matches at home.
Princeton was led by freshman Cody Kessel, who recorded a match-high 13 kills and added five digs. Sophomore Davis Waddell added eight kills, while classmate Jeff Stapleton had six kills. Senior setter Scott Liljestrom had 29 assists and four digs, while freshman setter Tony Ensbury had a match-high six digs.
Princeton nearly turned the momentum in the opening set by fighting off a trio of set balls, but the Mason defense forced a pair of errors to take the 26-24 victory. Mason built a lead early in the second and held off Princeton throughout, but the Tigers fought in the third set and were within one point at 15-14. That was when Kvidahl put his finishing touch on the match, serving Mason on an 8-0 run that included four aces.
Princeton will return to the court in two weeks for a 6 p.m. home match against Juniata, and will return to league play in three weeks with home matches against Penn State and Saint Francis.
