PRINCETON, N.J. (3/15/14) - The Princeton women's lacrosse team defeated No. 6 Virginia on Saturday, March 15 in a total team effort at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.

Junior Annie Woehling was a wall in goal, making nine saves in her first start of the season. Sophomore Alexandra Bruno and junior Erin Slifer both had five-point games. Slifer was dominant in the center circle with four draw controls wins. Adding to the offense was senior Sarah Lloyd scoring four times, while freshman Olivia Hompe and sophomore Anya Gersoff had two goals and an assist apiece.

The Tigers won 17 of 29 draw controls and forced Virginia into six failed clears of 12.

More than half of Virginia's goals came from the eight-meter, as the Cavaliers converted 6 of 10.

Princeton opened the game with two goals before Virginia took the lead after three straight, 3-2 at 24:11. It would be Virginia's last lead of the game, as it would only be able to tie the game three more times.

A goal by Hompe with 0:03 seconds remaining in the first half put Princeton on top 7-6 at the intermission. She was set up by Bruno while the Tigers were playing down a player, after a yellow card to Slifer.

After a Liza Blue goal started the second half, Slifer set up both Bruno and Gersoff to make it 9-7. Two free-position goals by Morgan Stephens knotted the game at 9-9 at 22:53.

It was all Tigers after that as Bruno, Gersoff, Hompe and Lloyd each scored as Princeton grabbed a 13-9 lead. It was the first time the Tigers had more than a two-goal lead all afternoon.

Virginia made it interesting with a 3-1 run over the next 10 minutes to cut it to two, 14-12 with less than four minutes remaining.

Princeton continued its strong hold in draws as Lloyd won the next draw and converted on a free-position attempt at 1:51 scoring an empty-net goal as Colgan came out of the goal to play the field.

Freshman Amanda Leavell won the next draw but a turnover led to Courtney Swan scoring the team's second non free-position goal of the second half to make it 15-12. Leavell again won the following draw with 1:03 left and Princeton maintained possession for its first win over a ranked team this season.

Princeton now 2-3 overall will travel to California during University spring break and will take on USC on March 19 and San Diego State on March 22.

Virginia's Stephens and Blue both finished with four goals apiece, with Swan had three goals and one assist. Colgan made eight stops in goal as Virginia falls to 3-5.
