POTSDAM, N.Y. (3/9/14) - The Princeton men's hockey team lost 3-2 in the decisive Game 3 of the ECAC First-Round series at Clarkson on Sunday, March 9 at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson took a 2-1 lead in the first period and the teams traded goals in the second. The Golden Knights went 2 for 5 on the power play while Princeton was 1 for 2.

The Golden Knights converted on their first power-play opportunity of the game at 2:13. Joe Zarbo circled across the zone and fired a shot into traffic from the top of the right circle. Jarrett Burton was able to get his stick on it and nudged it past a screened Colton Phinney. Aaron Kesselman tried to get a stick on it to keep it over the line but the lamp was already lit.

Sophomore Jonathan Liau knotted the game at 1-1 five minutes later. Freshman Ben Foster collected the puck after a dustup in the Tigers’ zone. He pushed it ahead along the right boards and had junior Tucker Brockett ahead. Foster sent the puck into the middle and Brockett gave it an extra tap over to the left for Liau. Liau whipped a backhander over the glove shoulder of Steve Perry.

Clarkson regained the lead at 12:29 with a 4x4 goal. Paul Geiger delivered a near perfect pass to Allan McPherson. Phinney anticipating the shot from Geiger hugged the left pipe, and McPherson had an open net on the right side and was able to put it away.

Sophomore Kyle Rankin scored his second goal of the series to tie it up 2-2 at 10:00 with a power-play goal. Liau factored in on goal once again, along with sophomore Mike Ambrosia. Ambrosia sent the puck along to blue line to Rankin at the top of the point, and he one-timed the puck blocker side on Perry.

Less than three minutes later the Golden Knights jumped back on top with their own power-play goal. DiNallo caught a Princeton breakout, set the puck down and played it ahead to Will Frederick who tallied the goal.

The teams shared scoring opportunities in the third, but still down a goal with 1:12 to play, Princeton pulled Phinney. Princeton called a timeout with 29.1 seconds left as a faceoff would be to Perry’s right. The Tigers continued to battle with the extra skater but could not get the tying goal.

Phinney finished the game with 32 saves, while Perry stopped 21 shots.

The Knights advance to face No. 4 seed Cornell in the next round.

Princeton ends its season 6-26.
