PRINCETON, N.J. (1/10/14) - Sophomore Mike Ambrosia scored the game-winning goal as the Princeton men's hockey team defeated Rensselaer 2-1 at Hobey Baker Rink.

The win snaps the Tigers' six-game losing skid as it begins the second half of their season.

Both goals were scored by players who have missed substanial time with injuries, in Ambrosia and Tyler Maugeri.

Head coach Bob Prier credits the return of injured players to how the team played tonight."In the third, before they pulled the goalie, I thought we had a lot of opportunities to go up 3-1. The guys were still playing hard and applying some pressure. It was nice to see. We have some health now and were able to have a more combative week of practice for once and we were more ready for the weekend rather than easing into the game."

"It's contagious. When guys like Amrbosia and Calof start making plays and then the other guys feed off of it and they can start making those plays too."

Rensselaer (8-9-4, 3-4-3 ECAC) got on the board first at 14:49 but Princeton (4-14, 3-8 ECAC) responded less than two minutes later.

Luke Curadi tallied his second goal of the season at 14:49 in a goal. The initial shot by Jiummy DeVito looked as though it was frozen by Colton Phinney, an argument captain Jack Berger tried to make to the officials, but the goal would stand.

The Tigers capitalized on their only power play of the game at 15:55. Junior Tom Kroshus stripped the puck from an Engineer in the Princeton zone and found sophomore Jonathan Liau. Liau skated up the right side sent a cross-ice pass to Maugeri who found room between the blocker of Scott Diebold and the left pipe.

After a scoreless second period, Princeton took the lead in the third as Ambrosia went top shelf at 1:04. Aaron Kesselman battled for the puck in the neutral zone and Ryan Siiro was able to fight off two Engineers as he slipped the puck to Ambrosia for the score.

RPI thought they had evened the game with 4:24 to play. Phinney showed the puck in the paint and the officials went into review where they ruled no goal.

With 1:57 remaining, RPI pulled Diebold for the extra skater and soon they had a 6x4 advantage after Kesselman was called for a hold with 39 seconds left. Princeton blocked five shots, while four went one and one was saved by Phinney.

The Engineers were caught in an offsides after a blocked zone to move the play into the neutral zone with 19 seconds left. Princeton didn't allow a shot after that point to earn its third ECAC game of the season.

Princeton was 1 for 1 on the power play and 4 for 4 on the penalty kill.

Phinney was solid in goal making 33 total saves for the Tigers. Diebold made 25 stops on the other end.

Princeton faces No. 4 Union tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
