On a career night for sophomore Amanda Berntsen and senior Kristen Helmstetter, the Princeton women’s basketball team earned a decisive 73-57 victory over Navy Friday evening in Annapolis, Md.

Berntsen paced the first half offense with 10 points, establishing a career-high with 12. She went 6-for-9 from the field and notched a career-best seven boards, all defensive. Her career marks continued as she tied a personal record with four assists, while adding a pair of steals over her 27 minutes of work.

For Helmstetter her milestone was one four years in the making. The post eclipsed the 500-point scoring mark, tallying 18 points for second-best in the game to bring her to 503 career points. The co-captain went 6-for-10 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the stripe.

Nearly matching her own career high of 21 was Michelle Miller’s 20, marking a season and game-high. The sophomore went 9-for-12 from the field and made a career-best four assists.

As a unit Princeton shot 50.9 percent (29-for-57) from the field and a perfect 100 percent (11-for-11) from the line, while holding Navy to 33.3 percent (21-for-63) in the game.

A Miller triple capped off a 9-0 run to lift Princeton to a 15-5 lead at 12:26, but Navy countered with seven uncontested points to make it a 15-12 contest at 9:29.

It would be the closest the Midshipmen would get for the remainder of the game, as Princeton showed a tremendous amount of resolve and put together a defining nearly six-minute run to go ahead 29-12 at 4:50.

The Tigers carried their rally into the locker room with a 36-22 advantage.

Coming out of the break, Princeton took its first 20-point lead behind an individual Miller 6-0 run to put the Orange and Black up 49-28 at 12:53.

The Tigers held Navy well below its 69.1 points per game average behind a sturdy defensive effort, outrebounding the Mids 42-33, as they teetered around a 20-point lead over the remainder of the half.

On a night where the sophomore class saw key contributors, fellow second-year player Annie Tarakchian led the Princeton rebounding effort with a game-high eight.

Princeton’s (4-4) four-game road swing will conclude on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at Binghamton at 7 p.m.
