EAST LANSING, Mich. (12/1/13) – Senior captain Jack Berger and junior Aaron Ave both scored as the Princeton men’s hockey team dropped an 8-2 game at Michigan State on Sunday, Dec. 1 at Munn Ice Arena.

Michigan State (5-7) took a 3-0 lead in the first period, and added two more to start the second. Princeton (3-10) got one back to make it 5-1 but the Spartans scored three straight to expand their lead before the Tigers scored the final goal of the game.

Princeton ran into penalty trouble taking 11 in the game for a total of 41 penalty minutes. It resulted in the Tigers being outshot 40-24.

MSU capitalized on its second power-play opportunity with a Jake Chelios goal at 7:57. The Spartans worked the puck around on the power play and Chelios one-timed the puck from the right point and it got by Princeton netminder Sean Bonar, who was being screened by Lee Reimer.

On odd series of events led to the second goal when Marlon Sabo blocked a Ryan Keller shot. The puck got trapped in his pants and after he was nudged by Keller it dropped down and was collected by Greg Wolfe, who put it between the glove and the right post at 10:46.

Villiam Haag put away a rebound goal at 16:06. Brock Krygier’s shot from the blue line rebounded out to the right side and Haag found it amidst a scramble and flipped it over the blocker.

The Spartans quickly made it 4-0 with a goal 1:27 into the second period. Travis Walsh fired the puck from the point through traffic and Thomas Ebbing was on the doorstep to tip it in.

A second power-play goal at 6:39 made it 5-0 as Haag scored his second of the game on a shot from the slot.

Berger put the Tigers on the board with a short-handed goal from Aaron Kesselman at 9:09 of the second period. Kesselman intercepted a pass between Wolfe and Walsh in the offensive end and centered to Berger for the goal.

After Berger’s goal MSU converted on the power play again, this time RJ Boyd got the score to end the second 6-1.

After some fisticuffs at the conclusion of the second period resulted in three penalties for each team, Princeton started the third with the man advantage. However it was the Spartans that found the back of the net when Wolfe scored his second of the night, a short-handed goal from Reimer at 1:51.

MSU’s final goal came at 14:58 off the stick of Joe Cox. The eight goals is the most goals allowed by the Tigers since Feb. 17, 2007.

Ave notched his third goal of the season with 56 seconds remaining after a shot by Garrett Skrbich was saved and sent off to the boards. Ave collected at along the boards and ripped a shot towards the net that snuck by Hildebrand for the goal.

MSU was 3 for 7 on the power play while Princeton was 0 for 4.

Bonar made 32 saves in net for Princeton, while Jake Hildebrand stopped 22 shot for MSU.

The Tigers return to ECAC action next weekend when they travel to play at Union and RPI on Dec. 6 & 7.
