EAST LANSING, Mich. (11/29/13) – Freshman Garrett Skrbich scored his first career goal as the Princeton men’s hockey team fell 4-1 at Michigan State on Friday, Nov. 29 at Munn Ice Arena, in the first of a two-game series.

Senior Andrew Ammon circled behind the goal with the puck and found Skrbich in the slot for the goal at 16:49 of the third period.

The Spartans got goals from four different players and took a 4-0 lead before the Skrbich tally.

Princeton (3-9) outshot MSU (4-7) 32-27 and 4 of 5 on the penalty kill, but was 0 for 4 on the power play.

Freshman Joe Cox gave MSU the lead at 4:02 of the first just three seconds after Princeton killed off its first penalty. A Princeton defender tried to clear the puck out of the zone on the penalty kill but it made its way to Dean Chelios. Chelios found Cox who lifted the puck over the shoulder of goalie Colton Phinney.

Sophomore Ryan Keller made it 2-0 at 17:30 of the second on a mishandled puck behind the cage. Phinney sent the puck around the behind the goal to a defender but the puck went off the skate and captain Greg Wolfe was able to handle it and send it across the paint to Keller.

A one-timer by senior Jake Chelios gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead at 4:26 of the third. After Villiam Haag won the puck off the boards he sent it up ice to Chelios who went five hole for the score.

The final MSU goal was a 5x3 goal as seniors Ammon and Alec Rush were both called for penalties midway through the third. Mackenzie MacEachern delivered the tallyl with a shot to the right of Phinney, slipping the puck between the pads.

Phinney made 23 saves in his third straight start. Jake Hildebrand stopped 31 shots in his fourth win of the season for the Spartans.

The teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m.
