The 2013 Ivy League champion Princeton open varsity eight was called back to the dock shortly after being awarded the Sally P. Shoemaker Trophy, and it couldn't have been a happier return trip. In a program where team depth and determination has guided Princeton back atop the league, the Tigers were also able to celebrate a second straight team title at the 2013 Ivy League Championships.

Princeton's victory in the varsity eight grand final, which came by nearly seven seconds over runner-up Yale, gave the Tigers their second Ivy League title in the last three years, and their 13th overall. It also clinched the team points title, which Princeton earned with an 81-74 edge over second-place Radcliffe.

"The team is what pushed our varsity boat to the top," said a soaked Lori Dauphiny, who quickly put down her iPhone and any other valuable before her team gave her a celebratory toss into Cooper River. "I couldn't be more proud of this whole group, and I'm very happy for the varsity eight. Everybody has worked hard to get here, and it takes a full team effort to win an Ivy League title. We're excited about today, and we're thrilled to be heading back to the NCAA Championships."

Princeton earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Championships — where it has competed every year since the inaugural meet in 1997 — with its brilliant trip down Cooper River in the varsity final. The Tigers moved out early, though Yale tried to keep pace as long as possible. Radcliffe, the only Ivy boat to defeat Princeton this season, stayed in as long as possible, but the Tigers took control in the second half of the race and won by open water.

"Overall, the race was really aggressive and we fought hard together," said senior Liz Hartwig. "We had a solid start, and built the piece from there. Our goal for the race was to stay internal and locked on to one another, and execute our race plan, which is what allowed us to get out and stay out.

"Our coxswain did a great job of letting us know where we were and where the other crews were, so we were able to take in the information and keep pushing," Hartwig added. "Crossing the line in first place was incredible. That feeling is what we work so hard for all year. I'll never forget it."

"It was a superb race, from the start to the finish," said senior Heidi Robbins, one of three members of this boat who also won an Ivy League title in 2011. "To do it with the eight other people in my boat, and with the team, it's a really great way to be a senior."

Princeton earned medals in the top five grand finals, including gold in the third varsity and bronze in the 2V, V4 and V4B. Both the second varsity and the varsity four will join the varsity eight when Princeton heads to Indianapolis in two weeks for the 2013 NCAA Championships. Last season, Princeton took fourth at nationals and qualified each of its three boats to their respective grand finals.

The Tigers will look for the same level of consistency this time, though that is a matter for another day. On this day, the one that V8 seniors Heidi Robbins, Molly Hamrick, Liz Hartwig and Gabby Cole looked forward to all season, Princeton was far more than consistent.
