It took more than 130 years for the Princeton heavyweight rowing team to claim a lead in the Childs Cup series, and the Tigers weren't about to give it up after only one year. The fifth-ranked Tigers remained perfect on the season by defeating Columbia and Penn Saturday morning on Overpeck Lake.

The Princeton varsity eight moved to 5-0 on the season, 2-0 in the Ivy League, by winning the Childs Cup showdown in 5:45.0. Columbia finished second in 5:47.5, while Penn took third in 5:56.2.

"We're happy about this win," junior Dave Mackasey said. "Both Columbia and Penn put up good fights and we're happy to have held them off to keep the Childs Cup at Princeton. We're practicing hard each day and we leave the boathouse tired, so hopefully our hard work keeps paying off."

The second varsity also had a strong performance, winning by 7.5 seconds in a time of 5:49.8, while the third varsity edged a Penn freshman eight by 3.6 seconds in 6:00.1. The fourth varsity also picked up a win in 6:06.9.

"It was a solid performance for all of our Princeton boats today and I was happy with the way that our guys raced," head coach Greg Hughes said. "Everyone rowed a good, simple piece. It was our first road trip of the year and the squad adjusted quickly to a new course."

It was an especially satisfying performance for Hughes, since it was the team's first race away from Lake Carnegie. In fact, it was the Princeton heavyweights' first race ever at Overpeck Lake.

"This year's racing was held at Columbia's new racecourse, and it was the first time that our squad has raced there," Hughes said. "The course is great and Columbia deserves a lot of credit for all of the hard work they have put into making it a reality."

While the course itself was new, this regatta has been going since 1879. Princeton won its 46th Childs Cup overall and its 19th in the last 20 years.

"Any cup race is a special one given the rowing tradition that exists at Princeton," Mackasey said. "The Childs Cup is the oldest intercollegiate cup and last year Princeton took the lead for overall wins for the first time in the Cup's history. It was a good win for us, but now we turn the page and look to Harvard next weekend."

Princeton will return to Lake Carnegie next Saturday morning to take on the fourth-ranked Crimson in the Compton Cup regatta. The Tigers will be seeking their first Compton Cup since 2006, and its first on Lake Carnegie since 2001.
