Harvard Claims Class of 1975 Cup, Tops Women's Rowing In Tight Showdown

If there were any doubts that the 2013 Ivy League championship in women's rowing would be wide open, these first three weeks of the season should have taken care of them.

In the season opener, Princeton defeated Brown. Last weekend, Brown defeated Harvard. On Saturday, in the 38th edition of the Class of 1975 Cup regatta, the Crimson topped Princeton by 2.2 seconds.

In other words, the Ivy Sprints should be as wild and unpredictable as ever.

Harvard-Radcliffe won its 13th Class of 1975 Cup, and its first since 2007, with a winning time of 6:11.7 on Cayuga Inlet. Princeton, which fell to 3-1 on the season and saw its 25-race Ivy streak snapped, finished in 6:13.19. Cornell, the host school, finished third in 6:25.9.

"It was a beautiful day in Ithaca for racing," head coach Lori Dauphiny said. "Harvard-Radcliffe executed a solid race and were very impressive. The Princeton 2V, 3V, 4V and B4 won in some well-fought races."

The second varsity remained perfect in the Ivy League, finishing in 6:18.4 to defeat the Crimson by nearly five full seconds. The third varsity also had an impressive performance, winning by 8.8 seconds in a time of 6:41.1. The fourth varsity topped Cornell in 6:45.7.

The Princeton varsity four took second to Harvard by 4.8 seconds in a time of 7:16.1, while the 4B won by more than eight seconds in 7:15.3.

Princeton will conclude its three-week road trip next weekend at Yale when it competes for the Eisenberg Cup.
